WHY DID WE COME TO COLOMBIA?

Motivations:
Years 1968 – 1972

  • Among the young generation of Dominican Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, working in the mission field in Africa, a rises the question of the urgency to open up new horizons.

  • The Pope Paul Vl insists that the missionary congregations “send labourers into the harvest” of Latin America, which undergoes big social,  cultural and political changes.

  • The General Chapter of 1972 decides to send a small group of Sisters a Latin America. This group chooses to live and work in the South of Bogotá, where, according to information obtained, the needs are urgent.

THE GROUP Consists of Sisters REGINA HÄUFELE, VIANNEY LINK (superior), and SILVIA BÜCHEL.

ARRIVAL IN BOGOTÁ: 17th August 1973

EXTRACTS OF THE CHRONIC

17th August 1973

On board of L.H. Boeing 707, flight Nr. 518. although it seems a little unreal, Sr. Silvia Büchel and myself are on the way to Colombia, flying at an altitude of 11300 above sea level of the Atlantic  Ocean. …..Under us a sea of grey clouds. May we be able, with the help of the prayers and the interest of the sisters, our families and friends, which we really experience these days, to pierce the clouds of poverty, frustration and hopelessness under which the people of “El Buen Pastor” are living in Bogotá.

19th August 1973

Our first visit to “Buen Pastor”...

It’s difficult to put the experience of this morning into words. One thing is absolutely sure, we felt: here is our place. There is a tremendous amount of scope for us. There is a vineyard, which needs labourers very badly. May HE bless our beginnings there.

Hna. Vianney Link.
