Its capital is Bogotá which comprises  the Capital District and it is also the capital of the department of Cundinamarca; it is a metropolitan area with more than eight million inhabitants, sub divided into 22 administrative districts. It is   the fourth most populated and important city of South America. The National Government's main headquarters are located in the city.

The name Bogotá has its origin in the indigenous word Bacatá, name of the capital of the Zipas (chiefs), which means “fence outside of the farm". The town also received the nickname of Muequetá (field or savanna of the farm") and that of Funza (“powerful male"). In fact the territory of the actual municipality of Funza,  Bogotá’s neighbour, and probably in some more adjoining land,  the Cacique (chiefs) was the head of the population of Bacatá.

Bogotá, the Capital of Colombia, is located on a plateau of the oriental  Mountain range of the Andes  at 2,630 meters above sea level. It was founded  on the 6th August 1538. It is the historical, economic, political and cultural centre of the country. Most of its inhabitants come from different parts of Colombia and today number about 8million.

Actually Bogotá is divided into 22 administrative districts that cover the entire city.  Each one is headed by a local Mayor and a local administration board.

The normal temperature of the Capital is about 14° C, but in the day temperatures may rise to unpredictable decrees.
