The Republic of Colombia, receives its name in honour of the discoverer of America, Cristóbal Colón; it is located in the north-western corner of South America, and its costs are of the Atlantic and Pacific ocean. It also holds jurisdiction on the Amazon river and that is the reason why it has been called “Homeland of Three Seas" .
The predominant religion in Colombia is the Catholic one, 92% of the national population affirms to be Catholics or are registered as such, which does not mean that all are practicing. Until the constitution of 1991 Catholicism was the official religion of the state, the country was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and still reporters refer to Colombia as “the country of the sacred heart". 8% of the remaining population is made up of other religious denominations, such as Protestants, or of Protestant origin, Witnesses of Jehovah, Buddhist sects and others of Taoist origin, Muslims, Jews or primitive religions. The ethnic diversity in Colombia is the result of the mingling of Indigenous Amerindians, of Spanish colonists and African slaves, which results in a population of mestizos, of white, of mulattos and blacks or the mingling of black and Amerindian, called zambo type. The proportions of the different ethnic groups vary greatly, according to regions. Actually only 1% of the Colombians can be identified wholly as Amerindian, taking the language as its base. There also exist minor ethnic groups which, however, are not less important. These are migrants of other ethnos like Arabs, Jews, Chinese, and some European countries as Italy, England and Germany, Migrants from the United States and other Latin American countries (Ecuador, Argentina, Peru and the Antilles) are present as well. Colombia takes the third place in density of population in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico. |
